People
We are united by a strong ’One Misys’ culture
Misys has been through enormous change over the last few years and we experienced further rapid and profound developments this year, with upheaval in our markets and the merger of our Healthcare business with Allscripts. Throughout the year our strong, clear values and culture proved enormously valuable.
Leading the way with values
During the year our Misys Values Committee carried out our first company-wide values survey. The results confirmed that customer satisfaction is the number one priority for employees. It also revealed that employees would like to have more opportunities for innovation.
Employee rewards are aligned to shareholder results
At Misys, results generate rewards. We believe everything we do as a company should be focused on generating long-term value for shareholders. Our remuneration plans are performance based and developed with measurements including EPS, revenue growth and operating profit.
Misys aims to create a high-performance culture
We are moving beyond the ’Get fit’ stage of the turnaround and are now in our second phase: ’Win more’. Our objective is to transform Misys into a high-performance company - a clear leader and innovator in our chosen markets. This year we saw the first benefits of the new performance management processes we put in place last year, and we extended our leadership training and development programme to include more key managers. Our employees feel valued by the company, are passionate about what they do and are creative and highly motivated.
We have completed our consolidation of systems and processes
We have transformed Misys into one organisation with consistent systems and processes. These actions support our business leaders in the achievement of strategic priorities including the implementation of a global Human Resource Information System. We have also identified synergies with Allscripts, and we are integrating the best of both companies to maximise cost efficiency and to utilise best practices.
We have a strong commitment to good environmental performance
We recognise that our global business activities have an impact on the environment and are aware of our duties and responsibilities to conduct activities in an environmentally friendly manner by complying with current legislation. We always aim to:
- Reduce the environmental impact of Misys business activities and increase where possible the procurement of the most environmentally friendly products, equipment and utilities
- Promote recycling throughout our offices
- Comply with all relevant legislation
- Minimise the consumption of energy and resources in our operations and, where practical, use materials that are renewable, recycled or re-usable
- Encourage employees to use green forms of transport.
Our Group Board of Directors is committed to monitoring the global carbon footprint of Misys. Our Environmental, Health & Safety Working Group reports to our Director of Global Real Estate and sets out to:
- Monitor the use of utilities at our top five facilities and implement a consumption reduction programme
- Audit the use of recycling facilities at all Misys offices to ensure we’re recycling where possible
- Work with global procurement to ensure large purchases (such as office furniture) are procured from environmentally responsible suppliers
- Monitor incentives offered to employees to assist in the use of green travel
- Invest in video conferencing facilities where possible to help reduce the amount of air, road and rail travel of employees.
Corporate responsibilty
We have continued to support education through the Misys Foundation
The Misys Foundation is a charitable trust set up to support IT education and extend the benefits of information and communications technology to the wider community. It was established in 1997 and Misys is its sole funder.
At the end of May 2009, the Foundation had committed a total of £1,689,118 for scholarships, school grants or other charitable donations, with the focus on IT education. In total, 337 students at UK universities have been helped with funding. In each case, financial need and proven academic ability are the requirements. A further 80 students at universities overseas have received scholarships, making a total of 417 scholarships since the Foundation started.
This year the Foundation distributed a total of £137,400:
- £128,000 was granted for 56 new scholarships and three extension scholarships, divided between 17 partner institutions
- £5,000 was granted to the Priory Primary School in Wimbledon, London, for IT equipment
- £2,400 was granted to the Fircroft Trust to help purchase equipment for IT classes which the Trust runs for people with mental health problems and learning disabilities
- £2,000 was granted to the Enterprise Education Trust, which runs programmes in schools to help pupils develop IT skills for greater employability and confidence.
We support individuals and organisations and the wider community
Our employees in India have initiated and supported a wide range of projects this year. Highlights include:
Youth for Seva
Through this project, part of the long-term ’Hindu Seva Pratishthana’ support programme for education, Misys employees in Bangalore raised funds to collect and donate school kits for poor children. Each kit contained a school bag, 10 notebooks, a pen, a pencil and eraser, and one geometry box. More than 5,000 school kits were distributed to needy students across Bangalore and some villages in Karnataka.
Welfare Association for Rehabilitation of Disabled and Society (WARDS)
WARDS runs a school in Bangalore for children with special needs. Speech therapy and physiotherapy services are provided to the students, and they can also gain vocational training in the making of various useful items, such as candles, chalk sticks, office files, envelopes, paper bags and other handicrafts. The Misys, Bangalore office conducted a Diwali sale at our premises to help sell the goods, with the considerable funds raised on the day donated back to the society.
Christmas and New Year Collection at Misys, Bangalore
Employees created a campaign to collect old and new toys, books and clothes from colleagues. All of our employees participated generously and the items were donated to needy people through selected NGOs.
Chaitanya Residential Special School for Mentally Challenged Children
This school for mentally challenged people has 40 students and six teachers. One of the teachers is mentally challenged himself, but has risen to his position with training at the school itself. Visitors from Misys, Bangalore donated toys and sweets, together with money for school meals.
Non-Govermental Organisations (NGO) help desks
Misys helps selected NGOs set up help desks designed to raise funds. In April 2009, for example, we enabled HelpAge India to raise considerable funding. HelpAge India supports a number of elderly individuals and provides a voice for India’s 80 million elderly people.
In the US, our employees in Allscripts made a difference by supporting programmes that provide medical research, education, awareness and access to critical health programmes. We also recognise the importance of developing, educating and inspiring the next generation through our support of programmes focused on youth. And, across the country, we are recognised as a valuable community supporter in terms of financial assistance and people.
Some of the most rewarding experiences from this year were as follows:
We sponsored Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) Walks and Galas in a number of cities, including Chicago, Burlington and Raleigh, and also organised employee volunteer teams to participate in JDRF fundraisers in other office locations. Employee contributions and corporate sponsorships exceeded $200,000 in support of this cause.
We sponsored the American Heart Association’s community initiatives and fundraising campaigns that fight cardiovascular diseases and provide educational and patient care programmes. Our commitment to Heart Walks and Galas helped fund critical research and care to address one of the country’s top healthcare issues. More than $75,000 was raised to support the cause.
We once again supported the Komen N.C. Triangle Race for the Cure, a global charity event supporting breast cancer research, education, and screening and treatment programmes.
This year employees contributed more than $30,000 in a workplace giving campaign to benefit Illinois healthcare charities.
Employees also supported help programmes such as the Salvation Army, Toys for Tots, Polar Express and Rescue missions by donating clothing, ’filled’ stockings and hundreds of toys to provide families experiencing financial hardship with a joyful holiday season.
Employees carried out food drives throughout the year to help provide ’basics’ during tough economic times. Hundreds of Allscripts employees also partnered with Habitat for Humanity to help construct homes in a number of cities.
Employees gave generously during numerous blood drives held throughout the year, donating nearly 450 pints.
Employees also took part in Polar Express, an event sponsored by Vermont Children’s Trust Foundation, which works to prevent physical and emotional abuse, substance abuse, school failure, and violence, and helps ensure that every child in Vermont has a fair chance for success.
In the USA Allscripts was awarded a spot on the ’Companies that Care’ Honor Roll in recognition of our community programmes and dedication to serving others. We encourage ’hands-on’ community engagement by providing employees with a paid day off to help non-profit organisations and charities.
