Our business
We develop and deliver open source technologies to enhance value for customers and grow the company’s addressable market. Established in 2007, we are one of the pioneers of open source in our chosen markets.
Our customers
We see growing demand for open, agile and reliable solutions that operate seamlessly with others. We are currently focusing on two dynamic market areas - connecting healthcare communities and also carbon trading. Both have excellent potential for growth and clear synergies with Misys and Allscripts solutions.
In healthcare, we believe taking an open source approach to interoperability will drive down the cost and complexity of integration, which has previously been a barrier to the adoption of Electronic Health Records (EHRs), with our offering called Connect.
In carbon trading, we believe open source technologies can play an invaluable role in enabling organisations to trade credits, meet obligations and reduce emissions.
We are supporting customers through consultancy and technical services, and we are developing and delivering industry-leading code and solutions. We are also working in partnership with other Misys divisions to deepen customer relationships and address new opportunities.
Priorities and actions
We are supporting the development of Health Information Exchanges
The US government’s healthcare stimulus package includes a $300 million grant for the development and support of Health Information Exchanges (HIEs). We are building critical components needed by our customers to exchange disparate information in their communities. We estimate that over 90% of US citizens are not participating in a HIE. Couple this estimate with the government’s mandate that all citizens need to be covered by a HIE by 2014, and we believe our biggest opportunities lie in those communities whose HIE is in the early development stages or who have not yet begun to develop one.
We offer top-end, high-quality consulting services along with customised application development and support which leverage open source assets to drive down cost and increase the customer’s return on investment.
We are helping to set the open source standard for healthcare
In addition to the creation of three new open source projects this year, we are playing an active role in setting the healthcare agenda - particularly with groups focused on interoperability. Misys employees currently serve on the Board of Open Health Tools and the Certification Commission for Healthcare Information Technology (CCHIT) HIE Working Group. We also received the Texas Governor’s board appointment to participate on the Texas Health Services Authority.
This year CCHIT included our open source project assets in the testing software for all EHR certification in 2009. This is critically important because the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) which was signed into law by President Obama in February 2009 offers the largest monetary incentives to healthcare providers in history (over $19 billion) to install and meaningfully use EHRs. However, a key requirement to receive the incentive is that the EHR be ’certified’. Misys’ open source code has passed rigorous tests and has now become a critical part of the test code needed for EHRs to become certified.
We are establishing a strong position in the carbon trading market
This market continues to develop, with many organisations appearing to favour carbon trading over tax-based schemes. Our main customers are corporate purchasers in the North American voluntary market, and these represent 68% of all voluntary traders worldwide.
This year we launched OpenCarbonWorld.com, an open-access community providing information and tools to help corporations learn about and reduce greenhouse gas (GHGs) emissions. In April 2009 we formed the first Business Advisory Group for OpenCarbonWorld.
We also focused on supporting the UK’s Carbon Reduction Commitment, a mandatory energy-saving scheme, by developing a carbon trading application for organisations to help them comply with the Commitment.

Bob Barthelmes
Executive Vice President and General Manager
“We are supporting the development of Health Information Exchanges, helping to set the open source standard for healthcare and establishing a strong position in the carbon trading market.”
Hartford HealthCare partners with Misys
This year Hartford HealthCare chose Misys as its health information organisation solutions provider to develop the technology to provide the newly formed Transforming Healthcare in Connecticut Communities (THICC) - a coalition of Connecticut’s major hospitals, healthcare facilities and physician practices - with interconnected, on-demand access to patient information. This will be the state’s first functioning Health Information Exchange (HIE) and the nation’s largest open source health exchange. The technology is scheduled for production release in early 2010. The HIE, coupled with Allscripts’ Enterprise Electronic Health Records and electronic prescribing, will make Connecticut a leading site for interconnected care.
“We recognised that leveraging open source technologies made sense in the area of interoperability and health information exchange creation. We began down this route two years ago but when we saw what Misys had already done at the 2009 Connectathon in Chicago, we were impressed,” said Stephan O’Neill, Vice President, Information Services, Hartford HealthCare.
Key facts
Did you know?
- The carbon market’s value doubled in 2008 from the previous year to $126 billion, with $92 billion derived from the European Union’s Emissions Trading Scheme.
- The United States government has re-emerged on the global climate circuit. The American Clean Energy and Security Act of 2009, sponsored by Representatives Waxman and Markey, calls for reductions of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions of 17% below 2005 levels by 2020. The bill is under consideration.
- With the advent of a US-based cap and trade scheme, the US market alone could reach $1 trillion by 2020.
- US President Obama is committed to creating a system of Electronic Health Records (EHRs) for all by 2014 and has committed $19 billion to encourage physicians’ adoption and use of EHRs, which will help reduce healthcare costs and improve quality while protecting patients’ privacy.
- The office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology, part of the US Department of Health and Human Services, is using open source technology to connect federal government agencies and health information exchanges to the Nationwide Health Information Network (NHIN).
OpenCarbonWorld.com
Our community information portal enables people to
calculate their carbon footprint and, over time, trade
carbon credits. It also provides free access to White
Papers, a glossary, wiki, policy news and workgroups.
Companies using it tell us it’s one of the best sources of
information on the carbon markets. During the year we
enhanced the initiative with the appointment of a Business
Advisory Board. This international network of experts in
industry, government, and academia serve as advisers
on law, technology and policy for OpenCarbonWorld.com.
The Board comprises:
Charles Scott, Intel Corporation
Donal McGranaghan, Asset Control
Howard Siegel, Brown Rudnick
Gavin Starks, AMEE
Mark Green, Tera Vista Systems
Margie Flynn, BrownFlynn
Peter Fusaro, Global Change Associates
